How often is the ESEM survey conducted? When is the next survey going to be launched? When will the next report be published?
The ESEM operates on biennial basis, with the current data collection cycle concluded in June 2024. The European report based on the 2023-2024 dataset is scheduled for publication in late 2024, while the next iteration of the survey will be launched in early 2025.
What countries are currently covered by the ESEM?
The ESEM currently covers 25 of the 27 EU Member States, as well as Liechtenstein, Serbia, Switzerland, Türkiye, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Please see the Country Teams section for more information.

What data does the ESEM collect?
The ESEM collects data on the characteristics (legal, financial, governance, impact) of social enterprises, as well as on the needs and challenges they experience. For more details on specific datapoints, please reference the ESEM reports of 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.
Have you used the same survey questions throughout each cycle of the project?
The questions remained the same for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 cycles of the project, but the survey was revised for the 2023-2024 cycle in order to collect more granular data and facilitate more rigorous statistical analyses.
How long does it take to complete the survey?
The survey takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes to complete.
